Mallorca might be more popular and Girona where a lot of the pros live, but nothing compares to the French Riviera. Snaking climbs meander though the cliffs and deliver you to mediaval hilltop villages. Eze village, perched pricariously on top of a hill offers views across the exclsuive St Jean Cap Ferrat and as the Grand Corniche meanders out towards Italy, you can see Nice to the east and San Remo to the west. This is a cycling mecca and playground for cyclists. Don't be surprised to see Team Sky riders on the road as you soak up the sunshine and culture of this stunning area.
DAY 1Arrival into Nice
Arrive into Nice airport and we will take you to your hotel. We work with thousands of hotels on the Riviera from Monaco to Nice to Cannes so whether you're looking for inexpensive, boutique or grand, we can organise this for you.
DAY 2Ride the Col d'Eze
Your trip will be unique and bespoke to you and today's recommendation is the climb up the Col D'Eze from Nice. The challenging ascent of the Col d'Eze (a gradient of up to 8.5%) contrasts with the lush vegetation as you climb out of Nice.
The tranquil view from the vantage point over Cap Ferrat, and the quaint village of Eze are moments of inspiration as you top out at Eze le Col. Keep riding up to La Turbie, down to Beausoleil and then enjoy the coastal road back into Nice. This makes for a spectacular ride and a great introduction to cycling on the Riviera.
DAY 3Menton, San Remo and the Climb to Peille
One of our favourite rides on the Riviera is the route from Nice out to Menton. You can choose the coastal route that heads through Monaco and whilst it's a little busier than the Moyenne Corniche, you can experience riding over the Formula 1 starting grid and through it's famed tunnel. Head round the cap at Roquebrune Cap Martin and stop for some lunch at Le Cigale overlooking the water.
From there, either carry on to San Remo or head straight up. The climb from Menton twists through forests, past streams and through cobbled streets of hilltop villages, before you eventually reach Peille. The climb is not well known and it will only be a few locals and some pros who know it well for company.
DAY 4Col de la Madone
The Madone is the most infamous climbs in professional cycling. It's not its scenery, difficulty or hairpins and it has never featured in the Tour de France.
The Col de la Madone is famous because it was Lance Armstrong's testing ground and it has become an integral part of the Armstrong myth. It demands attention and if you can get up it in 45 minutes, you're doing well.
Choose to extend your holiday or if you want just a short break, we will take you back to your hotel.
The French Riviera offers cycling for you no matter what your ability. Discover beautiful regions such as Col de Vence, Grasse and easier rides close to the coast. For keen riders, the Rhone Alpes are your playground. Visit the Tanneron and Esterel hills in the west, famous climbs such as the Col D’Eze and the Col de la Madone, in the east or head out even further towards the high Alps.
The Riviera has similar weather to that other well known cycling destination Mallorca. 300 days of sunshine guaranteed. Genuine year round cycling. November to February are the cooler wetter months but afternoon temperatures mostly reach the mid teens and most days are sunny. The proteams traditionally do their winter training here. All other months have fantastic weather but July and August can be hot! Best to ride in the early morning or early evening during the height of summer.
The holiday is a self guided holiday allowing you to explore the French Riviera on your own or with friends. However, if you prefer to be guided, we have some of the most knowledgeableand respected guides out in La Napoule on the coast.
You will want to know that your bike is in great condition and that you won’t have any mechanical problems during your ride. Our bikes are extremely well serviced and maintained but in the very unlikely event there is a mechanical issue with the bike (not including basic maintenance such as slipped chains or punctures), we will provide you with an emergency number for someone to come out and repair or replace your bike.
We have the best road bikes available for hire for your holiday. Simply advise your preferred options and components and we can match the right bike for you. Our essential bike for riding the French Riviera is a full carbon road bike with 105 or Ultegra groupset but we can upgrade or provide hybrid and e-bikes. If you would like, you can upgrade your bicycle to a full carbon with Dura Ace or DI2 electric gearing, or to our top specification bicycle - a full carbon road bike with DI2s, upgraded wheels and ultra stiff frame.
