REACTION TO: ALPE D’HUEZ, STAGE 12 & THE FORMIDABLE GERAINT THOMAS

Written by Jonathan B on 19th July, 2018

As 30 riders followed Steven Kruijswijk through Bourg d’Oisans and onto the base of Alpe d’Huez, the Love Velo office put our bets on for the winner of the 12th Stage of the Tour de France.

“Thomas. Thomas. Froome. Where’s Quintana? Er…Froome. It’s gotta be Thomas. Dumoulin?

Clearly we couldn’t agree but at least a few of us got it right.

Featuring as a Tour de France stage finish for the 30th time, Alpe d’Huez has always been one of the most iconic climbs in France, if not in the whole of Europe. The 13.8km ascent hosts the famous 21 hairpins with an average gradient of 8.1% and a maximum of 13%. If you’d somehow never heard of the climb before today, you’d know all about it by the end of Stage 12.

We knew what the mountain had in store for the Tour riders and eagerly anticipated the result. Would Thomas make a statement and win back-to-back stages following his incredible victory on Stage 11 or would Froome use Alpe d’Huez to kick start his pursuit of a 5th Tour victory?

As one of our favourite, and most popular, cycling destinations, watching the riders sprint up the last 5km of Alpe d’Huez filled us with excitement and jealousy. The screaming fans, the incredible views and the pure adrenaline of being so close yet so far. It’s one of the most incredible rides and we love sending people there on our Alpe d’Huez Cycling Holiday.

2km to go. We, along with every other cycling fan, were gripped to our screens, anticipating what was going to be an incredible stage finish. The following dialogue ensued:

“What are Team Sky hearing in their ears?!

This is gonna be an epic finish

This is a proper stage finish

I told you it’d be Thomas

Its not over yet!

Ooh Landas going…

C’mon G!

Where’d Landa come from?!

They’re all messing around, they’ve let him get back on

Go on go on go on

Yessss better line….!

Go on G! Go on G!

2 for 2 c’mon Thomas

GO ON SON

WHAT A WIN

Another good day for Rob’s Fantasy Team

WICKED.

Phew.

Exhausted, drained and almost in tears…we think we felt that more than Thomas. The GC leader finished the stage off in emphatic fashion and maintained his lead over Froome and Dumoulin. Here’s how social media reacted to the win:
