Over the last month, we’ve seen cycling enter the news in a number of different formats. From exceptional charity-led adventures to professional races all over the world. In this blog post, we’ll be providing you with the best cycling stories in August, sharing the individual efforts and wider industry movements that featured throughout the month.
Kitty Takes On Mont Ventoux
At the start of the month, inspired by Geraint Thomas’ Tour de France success, Kitty, a 10 year old cyclist from Wales took on one of the most famous mountains in the world. Mont Ventoux was, however, no match for the young rider as she conquered the 1912m peak in 3 hours!
We loved this story as Ventoux has always been one of our favourite and most popular cycling destinations. It’s great to see riders of all ages taking it on and proving that anyone can do it. If you’re interested in the challenge then check out our Mont Ventoux Experience.
LeBron James Loves Cycling
“Me and my friends, when we got on our bikes, we would just ride. Sometimes we would even get lost, because we’d be gone for so long. But there was a sense of joy and comfort. There was nothing that really could stop us. We felt like we were on top of the world.”
Whether you’re a fan of LeBron James or not, we were delighted to see someone with such a powerful influence promote cycling so positively. His reach and reputation will undoubtedly encourage more people to cycle, something we are very much in favour of.Cycle to Work Day
On Wednesday 15th August, it was the 6th annual cycle to work day. The movement was a huge success and encouraged 25,291 people to ride into work. Additionally, 433,289 miles were ridden and £194,980 was saved. The key stat, however, was that 13,431,959 calories were burnt on that day – if this doesn’t motivate people to cycle then what will!
Social Media Highlight
One of our favourite moments on social media this month occurred following the creation of #GoodCyclingDeed. This hashtag led to a number of cyclists sharing their good deeds and times when other riders had been good to them. It was a great exhibition for the kindness of cyclists all over the world. Have a read of some of the great stories here.
Love Velo’s Routes of the Week
On Tuesday each week we share our favourite routes from our cycling holidays. Each week we’re taken to a new corner of the world, following routes for families, experienced riders and groups of friends. One of our favourites from August involved ‘Exploring San Gimignano’.
