The best places to stay when travelling to Mallorca

Written by Jonathan B on 21st November, 2018

If you’re lucky enough to have visited Mallorca, you’ll have a good idea of your favourite towns, the best roads to ride and the most luxurious beaches to relax on. If you haven’t been before and you’re considering a trip to the island, it’s useful to know where to stay. Between us, the team at Love Velo have visited every corner of the island. So, whilst we may not be able to agree on the overall best location, we have a pretty good idea of the top 4:

Port Pollensa

Port Pollensa, the coastal town in the north of Mallorca, is the most popular base for cyclists. The modern town is frequently visited by professional riders due to the access it has to the island’s famous climbs. Cycle out to Cap Formentor, the most northerly point in Mallorca, which is just a 15km away, and tick this unique ride off your bucket list. Alternatively, head south to the Tramuntana mountains where Puig Major, Coll de Femenia, Coll de Soller and other prestigious climbs await.

Those seeking flatter routes will find these to the East of Port Pollensa. Follow the north coast and head towards Alcudia before, on return, cutting inland to Sa Pobla. We have a number of favourite places to stay in Port Pollensa and frequently return to the town when the Love Velo team make a visit to the island.

Alcudia

Further along the coast, just a 9km ride east, you’ll come across Alcudia. This is also a popular tourist spot due to its magnificent bay and medieval 14th-century walls that circle the historic town. Alcudia has recently blossomed into a vibrant, bustling tourist spot and is only on the rise.

Visit in the summer months as the town centre comes alive. Explore the open-air market where local farmers display their goods, discover the rich historic culture of the town and, of course, jump on the bike and discover the surrounding bays and coastal routes that make Mallorca such a popular destination for all levels of riders.

Soller

Those who have visited Mallorca before may be looking for a change in scenery and experience on their second visit. Our favourite way to do this is by staying in the town of Soller, located on the west coast of the island amongst the Tramuntana mountains. With a 4km ride to Port de Soller and accommodation in the shadows of some of Europe’s most renowned climbs, this location is ideal for seasoned cyclists and those seeking a new road riding challenge. From here you can head north up the coast to Sa Calobra, an equally stunning and popular destination amongst cyclists.

Alternatively, lose yourself in the mountains and experience the unparalleled freedom of cycling as you climb and descend through Mallorca’s smooth, traffic-free roads.

Llucmajor

Whilst Palma is the capital of Mallorca and undeniably the most well-known region on the island, when staying in the south, we prefer to head slightly out of the city and find relaxation in the smaller, neighbouring towns. One of these is Llucmajor. As the main town in the municipality of Llucmajor, there are a number of attractions that make this an exciting place to stay. Some of the most popular things to do here include visiting the 18th-century church of San Miguel, tasting the locally sourced food and discovering more about the island away from the crowds that congregate in Palma.

We love visiting Llucmajor on our coast to coast holiday. Find out more about this trip and decide where you’d like to stay on your next Mallorca cycling adventure.
