Is it Safe to Cycle Alone on a Cycling Tour?
Our solo cycling tours are built with your safety front and centre. Every route is curated and and tailored for self guided cycling holidays. However, there are some risks to consider. You need to be aware of where you're going to ride and if you're choosing to ride in remote areas. For instance, Tenerife is a fantastic road cycling destination, is incredibly popular and busy with cyclists. However, one of our recommendations to ride is in the Masca Valley in the far north west of the island. It is a stunning, baron and mountainous area, perfect for any Tenerife cycling holiday. However, it's extremely remote area with almost no mobile service, no refuges and very small towns. Our advice is therefore to always make sure you're properly prepared for the terrain you're going to ride. Set eff with enough time to get to your end point, make sure you have supplies if water and food, carry emergency cash and let someone know where you're riding.
Is cycling solo suitable for first-time tourers?
Absolutely. Many of our solo riders are first-timers. We offer beginner-friendly routes, easy navigation tools, and e-bikes for extra support. We'd recommend speaking to our team so that they can properly advise you on the best place to cycle. If it's your first cycling holiday, think about what you want from the trip. If you want company, choose a destination which is popular with cyclists, like Mallorca or if you're looking for some solitude, pick a place which is not in a tourist hotspot. For example, the Monchique mountains are quiet and a perfect retreat, whilst being very close to the Algarve making it very easy to get there.
Can I contact someone mid-ride if I feel unsafe or unsure?
Yes, always. We’ll provide you with your curated routes if you're on a self guided holiday and our routes team are always happy to run you through these pre departure, or speak to us when you're riding. We have a 24 hour emergency number and we will also provide you with the emergency number of the bike supplier in case you need any additional peace of mind.
What happens if my bike breaks down?
That really depends on the type of issue. All our cyclists need to have the ability to change a tyre. Whilst all the bikes we provide are in good condition and serviced before you pick them up, punctures can happen so it's important that you can change an inner tube. All the bikes will have a basic tool set but we usually advise you to bring a multi tool, just in case, and keep that with you on your rides.
In certain destinations, we also offer a rescue and recovery service - our team will come out and rescue you if you suffer an issue with your bike. Just a friendly heads-up: While our rescue service is here to save the day when it comes to unexpected bike breakdowns, it's important to note that it doesn't cover certain issues like punctures, slipped chains, flat batteries, or if you're simply feeling a bit worn out.
Will there be other riders?
This simply depends on where you're cycling. If you're in a cycling hotspot like Mallorca, Calpe, the Loire or Provence, there will likely be lots of cyclists. If you ride in the Spring or Autumn, you will probably even meet Love Velo riders as we send around 10,000 cyclists away each year. If you want to meet other cyclists, ask us which hotel to stay in to meet riders and also check out whether there are any solo cyclist rides going out from local bike shops, or use Link My Ride to check this out for yourself.
Do I have to carry my own luggage?
Nope. We’ve got that covered. Your bags are transferred between hotels for you, so you can just focus on the ride and the views. Your bags will, depending on destination, be picked up from your hotel at about 9am and they will be waiting in your next hotel by 6.30pm. We recommend that you take a small day bag with you to carry essentials such as sunscreen, portable phone charger and some cash in case of emergencies. All our bikes come with bottle holders so make sure you fill up your water bottle before leaving in the morning.

What Our Solo Cyclists Say
I really cannot recommend this company highly enough. The Canal du Midi tour represented excellent value, the scenery and sense of freedom was superb and my bike was brilliant. And I have to say, when I got that first glimpse of the Mediterranean after 265km cycling, I had a huge lump in my throat. What an achievement. A five star go solo experience.

I booked through Love Velo because the reviews were so good. I wasn't disappointed. Right from my first contact with LV they were easy to talk to and although I dithered (my first cycling trip abroad) they didn't press me. When I eventually confirmed my booking they took care of everything.

My first experience of solo travel and one that ran seamlessly! I went to France to stay in Bédoin to climb Mont Ventoux. I loved every single minute of my trip and will definitely be using Love Velo again. I could not recommend them highly enough!
