The Valley of the Tears The Toughest Climb in Gran Canaria

There are some spectacular climbs on the island and the climbs are less populated than those in Tenerife. Have you heard of the Valley of the Tears? If not, you can probably imagine how it got its name. It’s a gruelling 12km ascent averaging over 11%, with some ramps more aggressive than that.

Tackling the ascent to Pico de Las Nieves from the south offers two routes: through Arteara or via Agüimes, starting from Maspalomas. This challenging 47km ride, with a vertical gain of over 2,000m, rivals the climb to Mt Teide in Tenerife. Though the average gradient is 5%, brief descents near Arteaga, after Fataga, and entering Riscos de Tirajana National Park provide short relief. The true test comes in the final 11km, where steep gradients lead to breathtaking views with the iconic Roque Nublo to your left.
