Experience the gravel of Girona
Girona Gravel by @danni_shrosbree
With its spectacular gravel and stunning countryside, Girona is the perfect base for a Girona cycling trip.
My Girona Highlights
- Girona isn’t just any off-road adventure – it’s where winding forest trails, rugged paths and dreamy open vistas come together in one perfectly unpolished package.
- Girona’s gravel routes take you from cobbled streets straight into wild Catalonian countryside, with Mediterranean views just a pedal stroke away. It’s all about variety here.
- There’s more to Girona than epic rides – it’s the kind of place you’ll want to stay. Off the bike, the city welcomes you with medieval charm and a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for recovery days.

This is a trip based in a single location

I recommend staying anywhere in the city as you can. The Nord 1901 is a cool boutique hotel that welcomes cyclists.

In Girona, there are plenty of great gravel bike options.

Fly to Girona for a speedy airport transfer or Barcelona for a more frequently serviced airport.

My Recommended Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive into Girona
As soon as you arrive in Girona, drop your bags and dive into the city. Wander the cobbled streets, stroll across the River Onyar and treat yourself to some of the best food in Catalonia.
Day 2 - Introduction to Girona's Gravel
37km total distance
Today I’d recommend getting accustomed to Girona's gravel with a ride north. Head towards Cornella del Terri before looping round on yourself and coming back into the city from the north east. This is a nice short loop with very little climbing so it will get you well accustomed to your time in Girona.
Distance: 37km
Ascent: 300mDay 3 - Catalonian countryside
100km total distance
My favourite gravel ride in Girona is south of the city. You'll head south towards Vilobi d'Onyar before enjoying an incredible loop around the countryside where the Monastery of Sant Pere Cercada proudly sits in the heart of the countryside. From here you'll head back north towards Brunyola across the countryside and back to the city. This is an epic day of smooth gravel.
Distance: 100km
Ascent: 1,400mDay 4 - Lake Banyoles
65km total distance
Head north and explore more Catalan gravel before looping back on yourself just before you reach Esponella. From here, you can enjoy the stunning Lake Banyoles. Ride the gravel that surrounds the lake before sipping a coffee on the water's edge and then making your way back to Girona.
Distance: 65km
Ascent: 525mDay 5 - Departure
I think 4 nights is a great amount of time in Girona so today is check out day for your return airport transfer, or you can lengthen your stay for more adventure.
