Your Japan Guided Adventure
Your Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 - Kyoto
Kyoto was once Japan's capital city, and home to the emperor between 794 and 1868 and this is where your trip will start. To gain an insight into how the emperor lived, visit the Sento Imperial Palace within the beautiful Kyoto Imperial Park. Yet the places to discover don't stop there! Because a lot of Kyoto escaped destruction in WWII, there are thousands of shrines, temples and zen gardens to wander around.
Included:- Hotel
- Dinner
Day 2 - Kyoto
40km total distance
Your first day of cycling starts along the Katsura River, then onward past traditional Japanese houses and gardens to Arashiyama. Residing on the Westerly outskirts of Kyoto, Arashiyama is known for its memorising bamboo forests, which you will have the chance to immerse yourself in. After, cycle to the Tenryuji and Ryoanji Temples before ambling down the Philosophers Path, lined with cherry trees. If you are lucky enough to visit in early April, be prepared to feel awed by the vibrant colours of the trees blossoming. Once back in Kyoto, you will be invited to join an orientation tour of the Gion District where you can witness Geisha in the labyrinth of alleyways.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch
- Gion District walk
- Fully Supported Guided Riding
Day 3 - Nara & Kyoto
50km total distance
Today you will ride on a traffic free cycle path along the riverside to another of Japan's previous capitals. Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, beginning in 710 under the name of Heijo. Once in Nara, you will be introduced to the largest wooden structure in the world, which houses the Giant Buddha. Another important landmark in Nara is the Todaiji Temple built in 752 and one of Japans most historically significant temples. As you explore Nara, look out for the free roaming wild deer - they're very cute! En route home (which involves a train too), you will ride over the Nagarebashi Bridge. Featured in many samurai dramas, the bridge is 356m long and made entirely out of wood.
Included:- Ryokan
- Bed & Breakfast
- Todaiji Temple
- Fully Supported Guided Riding
Day 4 - Lake Biwa & Hikone
56km total distance
Leave behind the ancient charm of Kyoto and head to Otsu, set on the shores of the expansive Lake Biwa. Today’s ride is a leisurely journey around Japan’s largest freshwater lake, with mostly flat terrain perfect for a relaxing ride. Stop for lunch in the quaint historic town of Omi Hachiman, known for its preserved old buildings and scenic central canal, before continuing to lakeside Hikone.
Hikone may be small, but it boasts the impressive feudal Hikone Castle, one of only five castles in Japan designated as a national treasure. If time permits, it’s well worth a visit. Otherwise, enjoy a free evening exploring the local streets and dining at one of the charming cafes or restaurants.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch
- Omi Hachiman Historic Village Visit
Day 5 - Gero Onsen
Start your day with an early train ride, travelling about four hours north to the hot spring town of Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture. After checking into your hotel, step back in time at the Gassho Village, an open-air museum of centuries-old farmhouses. These steep-roofed homes and traditional folk art offer a glimpse into Japan’s rural past, far from its bustling cities. Take some time to explore, then join your fellow cyclists for an included dinner in the evening.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch & Dinner
- Gassho Village Open Air Museum
Day 6 - Takayama
55km total distance
Today, it's back on your bike, tracing the Hida River as it winds through rolling green hills towards Takayama. Ride along quiet roads up the valley, flanked by lush wooded hills and majestic mountains.
Arriving in Takayama (Hida-Takayama) by early afternoon, you'll have plenty of time to explore this charming city. Wander through the beautifully preserved old town, dating back to the Edo era. Discover traditional sake breweries, handicraft shops, and local food stores, offering a unique insight into Japanese culture. It's the perfect place to unwind after a rewarding day of cycling.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch
- Fully Supported Guided Riding
Day 7 - Gujo Hachiman
70km total distance
Rise early and head to the famous Takayama morning market, one of Japan's largest. Explore the many shops and stalls offering everything from fresh fruits and spices to craft wares. Then, saddle up for the 70 km (44 miles) ride to Gujo Hachiman. This is the longest ride of the trip, but the climbing is all at the start, giving you 40 km of mostly downhill cruising through the island's mountainous winter skiing region.
Upon arrival, you'll have plenty of time to wander the quiet streets and canals of this traditional town. Don’t miss the 16th-century Hachiman Castle, the historical centrepiece of Gujo Hachiman.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch & Dinner
- Fully Supported Guided Riding
Day 8 - Gifu
70km total distance
Today is your final rural ride, cycling the undulating but mostly downhill route from Gujo Hachiman to the riverside city of Gifu. Though modern, Gifu has played a significant role in Japanese history since the 15th century. Discover this history by visiting Gifu Castle on nearby Mount Kinkazan—the views are spectacular!
The rest of the day is yours to explore. You might visit the museum dedicated to the epic Battle of Sekigahara, further explore the city, or simply relax after a long and rewarding ride.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Lunch
- Fully Supported Guided Riding
- Gifu Castle Visit
Day 9 - Tokyo
Say goodbye to Japan's countryside, and hello to the exciting organised chaos that is Tokyo. Vibrant streets weave between both cultural and modern landmarks, creating a scene that feeds curiosity. From Wakuru Onsen, instead of cycling, experience the thrill of Japan's famed train network. Sit back and watch daily life fast forward on a Shinkanesn (bullet train), where countryside will soon merge into city. Upon arrival into Tokyo, which will be bang on time without a doubt, join the orientation walk. Get acquainted with Tokyo's bustling nighttime by observing the streets in their most active and raw form.
Included:- Hotel
- Bed & Breakfast
- Entry To Sensoji Temple
Day 10 - Tokyo
40km total distance
Get ready for a thrilling day with two fantastic rides in Tokyo! Start your morning cycling the local paths used by Tokyoites, discovering a blend of old and modern architecture that will delight enthusiasts.
The first ride takes you through iconic spots: Ueno Park with its cherry tree-lined paths, museums, and temples; the tech-centric Akihabara; the historic Nihonbashi district; and the upscale Ginza area, known for its luxury shops, galleries, and cafes.
Pause for lunch at the famous Tsukiji Outer Fish Market before embarking on the second ride. This journey includes sights like the Edo-era Imperial Palace, the 333m Tokyo Tower, the elegant Hachimangu Shrine, the manmade Tsukishima (Moon Island), and the towering Skytree Asakusa at 634m.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner. Afterwards, the night is yours – unwind quietly, hit up karaoke, or explore the city with your local guide.

What our Cyclists Say
Awesome customer Service like it used to be. When planning my husband's 50th birthday and knowing very little about cycling I decided to try Love Velo and I can't recommend them, and the service I've received from James Danvers highly enough.

I booked through Love Velo because the reviews were so good. I wasn't disappointed. Right from my first contact with LV they were easy to talk to and although I dithered (my first cycling trip abroad) they didn't press me. When I eventually confirmed my booking they took care of everything.

Everything about Love Velo has been faultless. From the initial notification of them teaming up with Le Col and to the pricing being unbelievable and then the customer service, top class. James, if all the staff are as attentive to every detail as you are then everyone will be as lucky as I have been. 100% at some point, hopefully in the near future I will be booking again with you guys. Thank you again
