This is a great warm up to riding in the Pyrenees. The distance is short and the climb is on your doorstep. Hautacam may lack the length, height, or prestige of the Col du Tourmalet, but its deceptive nature can easily lull riders into a false sense of security on a first ascent. The climb is highly scenic, yet demands good bike handling, with several steep sections set within an otherwise steady, unrelenting gradient.

It's a big day in the saddle riding from Argelès-Gazost but it's relatively downhill until the foot of the climb. The climb begins in the village of Bielle and is best known for its regular appearances in the Tour de France. The pass links the Aspe Valley with the Ossau Valley, and the French word “col” refers to a mountain pass, the natural saddle, or lowest point, between two valleys. This area is a true paradise for cycling, offering endless route options whatever your fitness level or preferred terrain. There is only one café stop along the route, so it is worth making use of it if you need to refuel. After having summited the Col de Marie-Blanque, very gentle incline leading you home can be tough.

This classic Pyrenean ride combines two legendary Tour de France climbs, the Aubisque and the Soulor, with some of the most spectacular scenery in the range, including the breathtaking Cirque du Litor balcony road linking the two passes.
