When is the best time to go cycling in Holland?

For most areas, Holland enjoys good weather ideal for cycling adventures, from April to October. The peak summer months of July & August can be busy in towns and hot, but you can still enjoy some brilliant riding at that time and if you avoid the midday sun. Our favourite time is April to early July and September to October.

Where is good to cycle in Holland?

Everywhere! We love the famous old towns of Amsterdam and Gouda but for more off the beaten track riding, head into the green heart of Holland or ride the northern polders and lakes.

Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy local attractions, such as cheese farms, historical museums, and charming cafes. The route often includes scenic stretches along the coast providing a safe and enjoyable ride for the whole family. Whether exploring the serene polders, the bustling cities, or the stunning coastline, cycling in Holland promises a memorable adventure for everyone.

Your Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival into Zoetermeer (close to The Hague)
Make your way to the your hotel, which is situated in the heart of Zoetermeer, very close to the Hague.
Day 2 - Loop Ride to The Hague
34km total distance
Today you will ride from Zoetermeer to the Hague. Your ride will be gentle and there are plenty of places to visit today. You can experience the Royal Palace and Gardens and the Dutch Parliament. For those who like art there is the Escher Museum of optical illusions and the quaint Panorama Mesdag - a 360 degree painted beach scene.
Day 3 - Cycling from Zoetermeer to Noordwijk aan Zee
31km total distance
Today, you will head towards the coast, cycling through Wassenaar, the town where the King and Queen live. If you have children with you and they like rollercoasters, waterslides and playgrounds enjoy a stop off at the amusement park Duinrel. Once you arrive in Scheveningen relax by the coast and enjoy the sea, beach, sand dunes and woods. Stay out to see the sunset over the sea in Noordwijk aan Zee.
Day 4 - Experience the Tulip Fields
18km total distance
The infamous Bulb and Dune region surrounds Noordwijk aan Zee, so its best to come in springtime when the fields are exploding with colour. Keukenof flower park is worth a visit with its incredible flower displays. Once you've seen the flowers, take a trip to the Space Expo to learn about astronauts, rockets, planets, perfect for kids. If you are in need of some relaxation after the tulip fields, simply head back to the beach.
Day 5 - Cycling from Noordwijk aan Zee to Zoetermeer
32km total distance
During this picturesque route back to Zoetermeer you will cycle past Katwijk, Leiden and Voorschoten. Leiden is a historical town, bursting with canals and museums. We recommend visiting Naturalis (Natural History Museum) alternatively, Corpus - The Journey Through the Human Body will keep any children amused. There are also botanical gardens to visit and museums such as The Natural Museum of Antiques and The National Museum of Ethnology.
Day 6 - Departure
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before departing for your homeward travel.

Just recently got back from a fantastic cycle trip around Holland and wanted to say a big thank you to Macauley and Love Velo. Everything was perfect and went like clockwork. The bikes, route maps and information packs were all first class and made navigating from place to place extremely easy. Wonderful tour of Holland beginning at Amsterdam - Haarlem, Leiden, Delft, Gouda and back to A. Six great days of using the many cycle paths through countryside and town, meeting helpful people (who all seemed to speak English) and seeing a variety of wild life and fields of flowers. Smooth transition from hotel to hotel: no problem with logistics. The canals were amazing. There were two couples, one of whom had an electrically assisted bike and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Highly recommended.
