Best Time to Go Cycling in Spain: When to Go Where?
Spring and autumn are the best times to cycle in Spain on the mainland but Spain's geography means the answer is rarely that simple. The Canary Islands sit off the coast of West Africa. Tenerife in January averages 18°C at the coast, with over 300 days of sunshine per year across the archipelago. Mallorca in spring is the most densely cycled island in Europe, with roads overtaken by riders from February to May. Girona in summer pushes past 30°C by midday, but the same city in April or September is the closest thing cycling has to a spiritual home. Where you ride in Spain, and when, changes everything. Understanding the Spain cycling season by region is the difference between an exceptional trip and a frustrating one. Below is a season-by-season breakdown, a regional weather guide, and advice by rider type, covering every destination from the Canaries to the Catalan foothills, month by month.
TL;DR - When Is the Best Time to Cycle in Spain?
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots on the mainland. The islands are a different story entirely. Here's the quick version:
Best overall: March to May and September to October on the mainland and in the Balearics; November to March in the Canaries
Best for the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote): November to March when northern Europe is cold and wet, the Spain cycling weather on the islands is ideal
Best for Mallorca: April May for peak Mallorca cycling spring season and the Mallorca 312 runs in the last weekend of April; September to October for autumn warmth.
Best for Girona and the Costa Brava : April to June and September to October. The pros live and train here.
Best for Costa Blanca and Calpe: Costa Blanca cycling is best in the autumn (September–October) and March to May, the Coll de Rates in almond blossom season is one of the great early-season rides in Europe.
Avoid: July to August on mainland Spain for long climbing days. Girona pushes 30°C by midday, and the Costa Blanca interior is genuinely punishing.
Cycling in Spain in Winter. The Canaries and the Coast
Months covered: December, January, February
Best for: Experienced road cyclists. The Canary Islands offers demanding cycling with huge climbs and epic descents. It's Spain's winter cycling destination for road cyclists looking for climbing. While most of Europe locks up its bikes in January, the archipelago is hosting some of the most serious training riding on the continent.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote have a subtropical climate means coastal temperatures average 18°C in January. It's worth noting though that each island has it's own miscro climate. In Tenerife, it's much warmer in the south west as the Montañas Negras shiled the south from what are cooler temperatures (and often cloud cover) in the north west.
Mount Teide on the other hand dominates the island and rises to 3,718m, making it the longest unbroken climb in Europe, and in winter you ride it through volcanic lunar landscape above the clouds. Read our full guide to road cycling in Tenerife to understand why so many professional teams base themselves here through the winter months. Gran Canaria's Pico de las Nieves and the Valley of the Tears are achievable in short sleeves in February while the rest of Europe is frozen.
Lanzarote is a different character: more undulating than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, more exposed to Atlantic wind, and famous as a triathlon training base. The roads are exposed, the volcanic scenery extraordinary, and the year-round consistency of the weather makes it ideal for riders who want reliable training days without surprises. It does however carry the threat of wind, as anyone who's ridden in Lanzarote will know. The wind in Lanzarote is fiercest from late May to early September, with the strongest winds in the height of summer. Our guide to cycling in Lanzarote covers the key routes, including the 10km climb to Tabayesco Valley, in detail.
On the mainland, it is possible to enjoy warm weather riding in the winter in Spain. We'd recommend basing yourself as south as possible where you're most likely to get blue skies. Malaga is fast becoming a great cycling hub whilst Calpe on the Costa Blanca, home of the pros, means you'll occasionally spot riders from the pro peloton riding the famous climbs during their winter training.
The Costa Blanca around Calpe is one of the finest winter cycling trips in Spain. The mountain range running behind the coast acts as a natural shield against Atlantic weather systems, keeping the inland roads remarkably dry and mild.
Cycling in Spain in Spring: Mallorca and the Mainland at Their Best
Months covered: March, April, May
Best for: All riders, peak cycling season across every Spanish destination.
Spring is when the cycling world descends on Spain, and Mallorca cycling is the epicentre of it. By March, the Tramuntana mountains are lush and green, the roads are in immaculate condition, and the island is already beginning to welcome riders. Most people stay in Port Pollensa and the hotels which once only opened in April, are now opening earlier and earlier, to cater for the hordes of cyclists who visit.
April is busy season in Mallorca whilst May warms up significantly and attracts even more riders. It's arguably the most enjoyable month for riding Mallorca without the event buzz: excellent temperatures of 20–24°C and all the iconic routes accessible. It's also when riders looking for something different start exploring Mallorca's gravel tracks, the heartland roads through olive groves and the quieter coastal paths that road cycling itineraries rarely reach. As we send thousands of riders to the island each year, we have some expert tips that you should definitely adhere to if you're planning on cycling in Mallorca in the Spring:
- To get the best choice of bike hire, you have to book early. Bike hire in in relatively short supply, especially good bike hire. If you are after a popular size bike (ie you're medium height), book early.
- Unless you're riding the Mallorca 312, avoid that weekend. It always occurs on the last Saturday of April and is one of Europe's great sportives, runs at the end of April and draws over 10,000 riders to the island. Choose from 167km, 225km, or the full 312km with 5,000m of climbing. The roads around Sa Calobra, Puig Major, and Cap de Formentor are extremely busy during this period and on the day itself, there are road closures in the mountains and across the island.
- The Mallorca Ironman 70.3 weekend occurs in early May. the cycle route begins and ends in Alcudia and so whilst it doesn't take out as much of the island as the 312, be aware that there will be road closures and some disruption to cycling when the Ironman is running.
On the mainland, spring is when Girona comes alive. The city's status as home to the professional peloton becomes visceral in April and May, cafés around the old town fill with WorldTour riders, and the roads to Els Àngels and Rocacorba are busy with cyclists from across Europe. Temperatures run 15–22°C through spring, with Rocacorba's exposed ridgeline slightly cooler than the valley.
Costa Blanca in spring is another favourite: the countryside around Calpe is in wildflower bloom, the Coll de Rates is at its finest, and the inland roads through Guadalest and Vall d'Ebo are as good as any riding in southern Europe. For riders planning a best time to cycle in Calpe trip, March to May is the sweet spot, with April standing out as the month where everything comes together.

Cycling in Spain in Summer; Early Starts and High Altitude
Months covered: June, July, August
Best for: Experienced riders with early start discipline; touring cyclists looking for morning cycling and relaxing by the pool in the afternoon. Summer is not the ideal month for cycling in Spain seasons: the mainland bakes in the afternoon sun, and you need to be disciplined about how you structure your days. However, there is some nuance to this.
When we talk about summer, it is possible to enjoy early summer cycling in most of Spain. It's hot but the mornings are often perfect, and if you stay on the coasts, it often doesn't suffer the brutal heat of the interior. Rocacorba in Girona before 9am in June, as an example, is excellent. By July and August, experienced riders roll from 7 to 8am and are off exposed mountain roads by midday. The Costa Brava coastline offers sea breezes that make afternoon riding more manageable as does Mallorca. You will of course be in competition with non active travel holidaymakers so make sure you're cycling safely and within your limits as Spain in the summer is thronging with tourists.
Our favourite way to enjoy summer cycling in Spain is to be on the bike early and enjoying swimming in the sea or relaxing by the pool from midday onwards. For leisure tourers, ride from coast to coast in Mallorca. For road cycling, ride in Girona and head into the foothills of the Pyrenees.
Cycling in Spain in Autumn, Mallorca, Girona, Malaga and the Costa Blanca at Their Finest
Months covered: September, October, November
Best for: All riders, quieter roads, perfect temperatures, and extraordinary light across every region Autumn is Spain's other sweet spot for cycling, and for many riders it's the finest season of all. Spain cycling weather in September and October represents arguably the best conditions the country offers: the summer heat has broken, the tourist roads have thinned, and the light on the hills is unlike any other time of year.
Mallorca in September and October is arguably the best the island gets. The sea is at its warmest, the holiday crowds have thinned, and the cycling roads feel like they belong to riders again. Temperatures run 20–25°C in September, dropping to a comfortable 17–22°C by October. The Tramuntana in this light, golden afternoons, crisp summit air, is a different island from the spring version. Even Sa Calobra becomes more enjoyable without the summer bus traffic on the descent. For anyone researching the best time to cycle in Mallorca, this autumn window often edges out even the celebrated spring season.
In Girona, September and October are when experienced riders frequently choose to visit. The roads to Els Àngels and Rocacorba are at their quietest, temperatures sit around 17–23°C, and the golden autumn light over the Catalonian hills is outstanding. By November, Girona stays mild into early December, but rainfall increases and some riders time their visit to catch the tail of the season before switching to the Canaries.
Costa Blanca autumn cycling is perhaps the finest period of the year for the region. September and October bring temperatures of 20–25°C, dramatically quieter roads than summer, and orange groves in the early stages of harvest. The inland routes through Guadalest and the Jalón Valley are extraordinary in low autumn light. The Coll de Rates in October morning air, before the sun climbs high, is one of the great rides available from Calpe, and one that most visiting cyclists never quite forget. For gravel cycling Spain options in the region, the quieter tracks that web across the Costa Blanca interior are at their most rideable in autumn: dry underfoot, cool enough for all-day riding, and almost entirely empty.
As the autumn season moves on, try and ride further south. Malaga offers incredible riding deep into December and you can often ride with the sun on your back at Christmas!
Spain Cycling Weather by Region; What You'll Actually Experience on the Road
Spain is not one climate. The table below reflects what you'll actually feel on the road, because the difference between each location and the month you cycle, can be vastly different.
Best Time to Visit Spain for Cycling by Rider Type
Performance and Road Cyclists: Girona, Mallorca and the Costa Brava
Best months: April–June and September–October
Girona and the Costa Blanca is where the professional peloton lives, and the routes they use, Rocacorba, Coll de Rates and more are yours to ride in spring and autumn. Rocacorba climbs 10.1km at an average 6.5% gradient and is regularly used as a time trial benchmark by Grand Tour riders. The descent is technical and the summit views over Catalonia are exceptional. It is, in the words of riders who live in Girona, the best 30-minute test in European cycling.
Spring and autumn give you manageable temperatures for sustained efforts, the kind where you can genuinely push on a climb without the midday heat shutting down the effort. Summer is possible with early starts, but the spring and autumn windows are when performance riders extract the most from the terrain. The greatest European cycling climbs guide puts Girona's routes in context against the continent's finest.
Leisure Riders: Mallorca and Andalusia
Leisure & Touring Cyclists: Mallorca and Andalusia
Best months: May–July and September
Mallorca offers the most accessible multi-day touring experience in Spain. The infrastructure, cyclist-friendly hotels, fincas and boutique accommodation offers secluded riding in the heart of one of the most well known islands in Europe. Andalusia is hot but an early summer cycling trip in the heart of Andalusia offers unmatched summer cycling in Spain.
Climbing Specialists - Tenerife and Gran Canaria
Best months: November–March
The best months for cycling in Spain for serious climbers are actually the winter months, and the location is the Canary Islands. Tenerife's Mount Teide offers the longest unbroken ascent in Europe, a sustained, high-altitude grind through volcanic landscape to a summit above the clouds. Gran Canaria's Pico de las Nieves and the brutal Valley of the Tears (12.4km at an average 11%, with sections touching 25%) are among the hardest climbs available to cyclists anywhere in Europe. The winter season is when serious riders come to the Canaries to train, build form, and test themselves on climbs that aren't available anywhere else at this time of year. The altitude exposure on Teide is a genuine training stimulus. Our guide to cycling routes in Gran Canaria covers the Valley of the Tears and the wider route network in detail.
Ready to Plan Your Trip? - Spain Cycling Season Summary
When to cycle in Spain isn't just about chasing good weather, it's about matching the season, the region, and the rider. The Mallorca 312 in April. Rocacorba in early October fog burning off to clear blue sky. Teide in January above the clouds. The Coll de Rates in February almond blossom. The Costa Blanca in autumn with empty roads and golden light. Each of these is a real, specific experience, not a generic seasonal recommendation.
