Spring Cycling in Mallorca

Cycling in Mallorca in April is certainly one of the best Spring holidays you can enjoy in Europe. Most airline fly there daily by April and you can be riding by lunchtime if you catch an early flight. Take on epic road rides like Cap Formentor and Puig Major in the Tramuntana mountain range or enjoy flatland cycling through rural Mallorca.

March and April are some of the best months to go cycling in Mallorca during the spring. April tends to be a little bit cooler than May, meaning it’s predominantly quieter with regular travellers although the cycling season well and truly begins by mid April. We highly recommend cycling in Mallorca in April but if you can, avoid two dates.

The first is Easter holidays where airline prices can be double what you might spend a week either side of Easter, whilst hotel prices increase to cope with travellers from the Spanish mainland during the Easter period. The second date to avoid is the Mallorca 312, unless you want to ride the event. The 312 weekend, which is usually the last weekend in April, will see road closures across the Tramuntana and Cap Formentor so if you’re out there on that weekend and not riding the event, cycling might be a little limited.

Why Cycle in April

With temperatures rising, Spring becomes peak season and is the perfect time to ride with cool mornings and warmer weather during the middle part of the fay. This is a great month to travel to Mallorca as the island starts to get a real buzz with almost all restaurants and hotels opening in the early part of the month.

It is likely that you will see more bikes than cars on the roads because vehicular traffic is somewhat quieter (unless you visit over Easter). You will have more freedom on the roads and a lot more room to descend some of the faster climbs without too many cars. Always keep concentrated though because even in April, the busses that can hog the road down to Sa Calobra are present. Our advice is to always ride early if you can. We have an extensive list of the best cycling climbs in Mallorca to take on during your trip.

Cycling races in Mallorca in April

Mallorca’s most prominent cycling race is the 312. It’s a sell out event every year and takes in the best of the island across 3 separate distances. You can ride 167 km (with 2,500m of climbing), the 225k distance (with 3,900m of climbing) or the epic 312km distance (with over 5,000m of climbing). The event had no more than 500 participants 10 years ago, when it in circum navigated the island. Nowadays, up to 10,000 riders compete and the route now takes in the Tramuntana mountains before looping back up and across the northern coastline.

Another incredible event is Mallorca 140.6, a new triathlon in Mallorca that takes place in the beautiful bay of Alcudia. The swim is either 2 or 4km, the bike route is just short of 90km, on an almost entirely flat ride and the 10km run is also flat along Playa de Muro overlooking the Bay of Pollensa.

The weather in April

Mallorca’s springtime is ideal for riding, as the mild temperatures make for incredible riding flexibility throughout the morning and day. The atmosphere is tranquil, and larger groups of tourists tend to wait until summer to visit. The sea temperature starts to warm up in April, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing swim post ride. Enjoy the beautiful blue skies and endless Spanish nature while travelling through the mountains with a friend or partner.

As the Tramuntana Mountain range is a little higher in altitude, it has a cooler microclimate. Pack a windbreaker or light jacket for your descents.
