Cycling in Lake Garda

Written by Jonathan B on 12th March, 2019

Alongside British Cycling, we’ve made Lake Garda our Destination of the Month for March.

As the largest lake in Italy and the chosen destination for 7% of all tourists travelling to Italy, it is no wonder we love Lake Garda so much.

Nestled between Verona and Brescia, Lago di Garda provides the perfect backdrop to a Love Velo cycling holiday. Find out why it is so popular and how you can ride here yourself…

The Lake

…of course. The 90 miles of shoreline make this one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy. One of our favourite places to stay is in Riva del Garda, a charming town on the northern shore of Lake Garda. With lasting views over the water through the jagged mountains and vibrant flowers lined along the waterfront, you’ll struggle to find anywhere more picturesque to stay in northern Italy.

Guided Rides

We could speak about the views and the places to relax all day, however, we’re here to cycle. And cycle we will. The Lake is ideal for riders of all abilities. In our opinion, the best way to explore the region is by using a knowledgeable guide.

The local riders know the area better than anyone else, allowing you to find out more about the history and culture of the region all whilst enjoying unforgettable days out on the bike.

Italian Food and Wine

Following a successful day of riding, there’s nothing better than kicking back and relaxing alongside the lake, tasting the local food and sipping on a glass of wine. Lake Garda is home to a number of quaint coffee shops, delicious restaurants and trendy lakeside bars. You’ll never be short of options as you taste the locally sourced wines and try the Yota, Frico, Panna Cotta, Carne Salada and other incredible mains and desserts.

Charming Towns

The previously mentioned Riva del Garda will always be one of our favourite places to stay. However, this makes up just one of the beautiful towns and villages that overlook the lake. As you visit the different towns, you’ll notice the recurring theme of colourful lakeside buildings, each one different to the last.

In Torbole, walk down the promenade and pick up on the Austrian heritage that has shaped the town’s architecture whilst, in Sirmione, lose yourself in the town that is surrounded on three sides by the lake. Explore the medieval architecture and relax at one of the hidden coffee shops in Sirmione: ‘the pearl of the islands and peninsulas’.

Choice Of Bikes For All Types Of Riders

Another feature that makes cycling in Lake Garda so special is the choice of riding available. The rugged mountains that tower above the lake provide mountain bikers with the chance to test themselves whilst road cyclists can ride till their heart’s content along the smooth, undulating, traffic free roads that overlook the lake.

We are also excited to offer Love Velo travellers the option to ride the newly released Pinarello Nytro e-road bike, a bike only available in a few European locations. You can test this out on our fully-flexible Road Cycling Holiday in Lake Garda.

Cyclists ride at the Lake Garda

Year on year we’ve watched Lake Garda grow in popularity as a cycling destination. Its natural beauty contrasts with the serene lifestyle lived by the locals to create a relaxing and beautiful destination for cyclists. Ride here with Love Velo, you won’t regret it.
