Cycling in the Sierra Nevada

Written by Jonathan B on 28th March, 2019

It began with a request for ‘an epic 2 week cycling holiday’. There was no preference of destination, a rough idea of dates and only one demand: there MUST be climbing.

This was the bread and butter of the Love Velo experience team. Following some group discussions and a back-and-forth with the client, we knew we had built the perfect, fully-flexible cycling holiday in southern Spain. Incredible riding along coastal routes and inland, an abundance of challenging climbs, a beautiful selection of hotels, multiple destinations, warm weather guaranteed and the trip of a lifetime.

The Sierra Nevada was the focus for this cycling adventure. With famous rides such as the Goats Path and the Carr de El Purche, we knew we’d found the perfect destination for a passionate group of road cyclists.

The group of 4 will pick up their hire car on arrival in Malaga before driving to Almunecar where they will spend the next 4 days in a beachside hotel, riding up into the Sierra Nevada mountains and touring the coast from east to west. Almunecar is a buzzing tourist destination due to its stunning Costa Tropical beaches. After a relaxing start to the trip, they will then jump back in their car and head north and into the Sierra Nevada.

Granada is the next stop and this is where the climbs will begin. From here, the group will tackle the Goats Path, the ride to Cáñar (see below for switchback heaven), the three routes to the Sierra Nevada and other impressive rides. Following a recent trip to Granada from one of the Love Velo travel specialists, we knew that this was the perfect base for some incredible riding.

To ensure the trip is perfect, we have provided the group with a selection of GPX routes to choose from. These vary in distance and height gained however, based on discussions with the lead booker, we get the feeling they will have the 120km+ days firmly on their minds in the lead up to this trip! Following 5 days in Granada, they will then move on to their final hotel in Cordoba.

Córdoba is a beautiful town north-west of Granada. It is steeped in cultural history and most commonly known for the Mezquita: one of the most significant Islamic buildings in the country. Standing as a symbol for when Córdoba was the capital of Islamic Spain, anyone who stays in the city is recommended to visit the magnificent cathedral. The group’s visit to Córdoba will provide the perfect end to their cycling holiday in southern Spain. Taking in the rich culture and enjoying some scenic local riding will leave them with longing memories of the region.
