The Greatest Cycling Climbs – Puig Major

Written by Robyn Oppenheimer on 21st December, 2018

Puig Major is famous amongst the riders that throng to Mallorca every year. You can’t access the summit but the ride up from Soller is a Mecca for those searching for the best cycling routes in Europe.

The Location

Puig Major is located in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and is the highest peak in Mallorca.

Why Puig Major?

The challenge of Puig Major is the length, a 14km climb.  However, with a moderate and steady gradient to the top, this is a popular climb for those who want to get into good rhythm on the bike while taking in the stunning views of Mallorca. It’s the perfect climb as part of a Mallorca cycling holiday.

The Stats

If you complete the 13.9km ride from Soller in under 1 hour, that is considered to be a ‘good’ time. The mountainous route takes you through largely rocky and woodland landscapes.  The gradient is 6.2% and the route starts at nearly sea level after Soller, climbing up to the Monnaber tunnel.   From there you will be rewarded with magnificent views across the Tramuntana and Gorg Blau.  The roads are also wide so if there is any traffic, there is sufficient room for cars to overtake easily.

Puig Major and Gorg Blau

Alternatively, you can climb Puig Major from Panta de Gorg Blau on the North East side which is 5km shorter.

You can also do a loop with Coll d’Orient which is a great way to experience cycling in Mallorca and in particular, cycling in the Tramuntana mountains.   If you are feeling particularly fit, turn off and tackle the mighty Sa Calobra although make sure you’re at the bottom nice and early to miss the coaches! Ride this on our Mallorca Cycling Holiday.

Off the Bike

If you need to fill up your water bottle do this in Port Soller. With stunning views over the water, and some amazing palces to enjoy tapas, this is one of the most beautiful places on the island.
